John J. Pershing was the son of John F. and Ann E. Pershing. In 1865, John J. was enrolled in a local "select school" for intelligent youth and later continued on to secondary school. Upon graduation in 1878, Pershing began teaching at a school for African American youth in Prairie Mound.
